Symmetry lesson...

We started our discussion about symmetry by looking at picture cards and discussing if they were symmetrical. We used a straw to divide the object to see if it was the same on both sides.
Each child got to 'quiz' their classmates with their object and then
test it out by placing the straw over the picture.

Two hula hoops were placed on the floor, one for things that were symmetrical and one for
things that were not. Some of the examples we tried were symmetrical if the
straw was vertical, but if we put the straw horizontal, then the object was not symmetrical. So,
we changed our hula hoops into a Venn Diagram and discussed what a Venn Diagram was.
For example, the comb is symmetrical if the straw is vertical but not if we put the straw horizontal. So it was a little bit of both...
Next, we asked the kids to walk around the room and find items that were either symmetrical or not. Each pair of children were able to explain to the class why their object was or was not symmetrical.
This activity was used to help children transfer what we are learning about symmetry to their own existing world!

Our next symmetry activity involved the Smart Board. Each child got the opportunity to pick an object and drag it to the symmetrical circle or the non-symmetrical circle.

The Smart Board is a very useful tool that really engages all the children during our science activities!
